Healthy Hair through Every Season🍂

There’s something about fall that makes us want to change everything.
New clothes. New routines. New hair color. Maybe even a new haircut.
And while I absolutely love a beautiful fall hair change, there’s one thing I don’t want you to feel like you need to change every season:
Your entire hair routine.
As the weather changes, your hair and scalp can change with it. Cooler, drier air, indoor heat, increased friction from sweaters, scarves and coats, and changes in how we style our hair can all make us notice things we didn’t notice a few months ago.
Every fall, I tend to see a few of the same things behind my chair: more noticeable shedding, a little more breakage, and dry or uncomfortable scalps.
The good news? These changes are often manageable with the right upkeep.
You don’t need perfect hair. You just need to pay attention to what your hair is asking for.

Why Does My Hair Feel Different in the Fall?
Your hair doesn’t exist in a bubble. It responds to the environment around it.
As the weather gets cooler and the air becomes drier, your hair can lose moisture more easily. Then we move indoors where heaters and furnaces can create another dry environment. Add in scarves, hats, coats, sweaters and all the extra friction that comes with cooler-weather clothing, and your hair can start feeling a little different.
You may notice:
More dryness or roughness
More tangling
Static
A dry, itchy or flaky scalp
More breakage ( especially with a ponytail)
Hair that doesn’t seem to style the way it did during the summer (limp curls for curly hair)
More noticeable shedding
None of these automatically mean your hair is unhealthy.
Sometimes your hair simply needs a little extra support.

What About Fall Shedding?
This is one of the things I hear about most this time of year:
“Why am I losing so much hair?”
It’s normal to notice some changes in shedding throughout the year, and it can be especially noticeable during seasonal transitions. What you see in your brush or shower can also be affected by how often you wash and style your hair.
The important thing is to pay attention to what’s normal for you.
If you notice a sudden, significant or ongoing change in shedding, that’s something to bring up with your healthcare provider rather than assuming it’s simply seasonal.
But if you’re noticing a little more hair in your brush as fall arrives, don’t automatically panic.
Instead, focus on the things you can control: gentle handling, regular haircuts, a healthy scalp, appropriate home care and protecting your hair from unnecessary damage.
Dryness: Give Your Hair What It Needs
One of the biggest mistakes I see is waiting until hair is really dry before doing anything about it. Think of your hair care the same way you think about taking care of your skin. You don’t wait until your hands are cracked before you use lotion.
Your hair benefits from consistent care, too.
A few simple things can help:
Condition consistently. Don’t skip conditioner just because you’re short on time. Your hair needs that conditioning support, especially as the air gets drier.
Be gentle when your hair is wet.Wet hair is more vulnerable to stretching and breakage, so avoid aggressive brushing or pulling. I’ve even seen where the headband you wear to wash your face with or the clips to keep hair out of the face can be causing the breakage.
Keep up with your haircuts.Regular trims don’t make your hair grow faster, but they can help prevent small amounts of damage from traveling farther up the hair shaft. Think of it like your windshield. If you get a little crack and take care of it right away, you can keep that crack from spreading across the glass. Your hair works in a similar way. Taking care of small signs of damage can keep it from spreading up the shaft of the hair.
Pay attention to friction. Wind, scarves, sweaters, coats and even your favorite winter accessories can create more friction than you realize. Friction equals Frizz or (breakage).
Use the right support at home.Sometimes your hair needs more moisture. Sometimes it needs more protection. Sometimes it needs both.
Which brings us to an important question…
Moisture or Protection: Which One Does Your Hair Need?
They’re not the same thing.

Why Does Your Hair Need Moisture?
Hair naturally contains water, and its condition depends in part on its ability to hold onto moisture. When the air around us becomes drier, along with things like indoor heat, frequent heat styling and washing, hair can lose moisture to the air more easily.
When hair doesn’t have enough moisture, you may notice that it feels:
Dry or rough
Dull
Tangly
Less flexible
More prone to frizz, static and breakage
Moisture helps hair stay soft, flexible and easier to manage. When your hair has the right amount of moisture and conditioning support, it can better handle the everyday things we ask it to do—brushing, styling, coloring and simply living in it.
But moisture isn’t the only thing your hair needs. If you’re using heat, coloring your hair or putting your hair through a lot of everyday wear and tear, protection matters, too. That’s why the goal isn’t simply to add more moisture—it’s to understand what your hair actually needs.
Healthy hair isn’t about using the most products.
It’s about using the right support consistently.

Colored Hair Needs Protection, Too
Think about buying a brand-new car.
It comes home shiny, clean and beautiful. But imagine never washing it. Then it goes through months of sun, wind, dust and road debris.
Eventually, that shiny finish starts to look dull.
The car didn’t suddenly become a bad car—it simply went through everyday life without much protection or upkeep.
Your hair color can be similar.
When you leave the salon, your color is fresh, shiny and exactly where you want it. But then your hair goes through everyday life: washing, heat styling, sun exposure and everything else that comes with living in it.
Without the right upkeep and protection, color can gradually start to look dull or fade sooner than you’d like.
Think of your at-home hair care like washing and waxing your car. The goal isn’t to completely redo the paint job every few weeks. It’s to take care of what you already have so it continues to look beautiful for longer.
That means using the right shampoo and conditioner, protecting your hair from heat, keeping up with regular haircuts and giving your hair additional support when it needs it.
And just like a good wax helps protect that shiny finish, the right protection for your hair can help support both the health of your hair and the longevity of your color.
At Curlz, our Strengthening Treatment is one way we can give fragile hair some extra support while also helping promote longer-lasting color.
Because beautiful color isn’t just about the day you leave the salon.
It’s about caring for it through everything that comes after.
We want the hair underneath that color to feel beautiful and healthy, too.
This might be my biggest piece of advice for fall:
Make your plan before you need it.
The holidays have a way of sneaking up on us.
Suddenly it’s November. Then Thanksgiving. Then Christmas parties, family pictures, holiday gatherings and all the things.
And that’s when everyone realizes they need a haircut, color, treatment and a miracle. 😂
Instead, think about October as your healthy hair reset.
Take a look at your hair and ask:
Does it need more moisture?
Does it need more protection?
Am I noticing more breakage?
Is my scalp feeling dry?
Is my color still looking the way I want it to?
Am I overdue for a haircut?
Am I using the right products at home?
Is my next appointment already on the calendar?
You don’t have to do everything at once.
Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do for your hair is simply stay consistent.
A haircut when you need one.
Color maintenance before you’re desperate for it.
A strengthening or conditioning treatment when your hair needs extra support.
The right products at home.
And protection from the things that can cause unnecessary damage.

Make Your Fall Hair Plan
Healthy hair through every season doesn’t mean your hair will look or feel exactly the same all year long.
It means you’re paying attention.
You’re making small adjustments when your hair needs them.
And you’re taking care of it before a small concern becomes a big one.
Your hair doesn’t need perfection. It needs support.
So as we head into fall, don’t wait until your hair is struggling to start taking care of it.
Make a plan now—and carry that healthy hair with you all the way into the holidays. 🍂
